Music and Gender Blog
n my experience, I would say different genders listen to similar types of music. We all listen to the same kinds of music in my friend circle. My male and female friends listen to rap and pop, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Usher.
My 12-year-old girl cousin loves to listen to the soundtrack to Hamilton like I do. Sometimes we listen to the soundtrack together and sing along to all the songs. My cousin is also a dancer, so she listens to all types of music. She often dances to pop songs and classical songs.
In some of the choirs I have been in, I have noticed a few male soprano singers. It is interesting to see a mix of female and male sopranos. There have also been some female tenor singers and male altos.
Within the styles of music that I listen to, I have not seen the media treat the guys and girls differently. I haven't noticed any difference in who plays the instruments in the music ensembles. I have found that the sound tech people are both genders as well. There have been some girls and some guys working in the sound booth at my church. My sister worked the sound booth at my high school for many of our plays and performances. Who does what job in the music field does not seem to be determined by gender.
My musical genes come from my grandmother, who sings in the choir at our church. In the sanctuary at my church, there are male alto singers who sing well. Singing in the Sanctuary Choir makes me happy. I love that our choir director gets the congregation, male and female, to sing the hymns. My favorite hymn to sing is "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." It is such a beautiful song, and I enjoy it so much.
Katy- great connections made in this article! You made a lot of good points between pop culture, choir culture, church culture, etc. When I was thinking about this prompt, I noticed there was no difference between gender and the music my friends listen to as well, just like how you said. Nowadays, it seems like everyone can just enjoy what they like and I'm so grateful it has ended up this way! Great work!
ReplyDeleteHey Katy! I love that you pointed out the connections that men and women have through music. It's easy to see the differences in music preferences but you and your friend group is a perfect example of the musical similarities all genders have in common. Music doesn't have a gender so it makes sense that every gender identity can enjoy all kinds of music. I also loved hearing about your experiences in church choir. I love come thy fount of every blessing too :)
ReplyDeleteHi Katy, I really liked how you provided us with very specific examples on your views of music and gender. I completely agree that in the music field today, gender should not be a factor in media and professional settings. Sometimes I think people can forget that music is a universal idea that ties us together as individuals and not based on how we identify in society. The hymn that you introduced is one that I haven't heard before, its really calming and lighthearted. Thank you for sharing!
